‘’Maa’mi’’

The cock crows ‘kukuruku’ to tell of her arduous struggles.

While the bed bugs feast on her blood.

Biting daily to make her rise with a startle.

The bugs bug to bite her to reality.

To remind her once more that she’s in no wonderland.

Her dreams cooperate and tell the story of, ‘mama Akin on the farmland.’

The cock only crows to wake the slumbering villagers rousing.

And the small children malingering.

To arise and see the wonder of Mother Nature.

Not the glorious skies or the swaying trees.

Nor the warm sun dancing shyly beneath the clouds.

But the wonder of her arms spread.

“Mama has swept the backyard and the courtyard.”

“Even the hot yam that burns the tongue is ready to be served in the brown calabash.”

“Eat now my children, your uniforms are ironed already.”

“My husband the hot water in the black basin is ready for bath.”

“Let me now prepare to go to the market, Mama Onye awaits me.”

.

The swaying trees that grow are planted.

The shy sun that glows at dawn is one of the glories of Eledua, the divine creator.

But the nature of maami is a mystery.

The men of ‘akinkanju’ whisper that she is a feeble creature.

Only created by Eledumare to satisfy the tingling object between the solid walls that helps them stand in battle.

Otherwise, she’s weak as an egg.

The men of ‘okunrinogun’ say she is merely one of the spoils of war,

From the battle fought in ‘Laarinwa’ village by the aare ona kakanfo.

But the men of ‘agbelona’ say she is a fertile hen.

Simply to increase the number of muffling screams in the large hut, and the number of the tiny legs that trail along the path to the farm.

.

But Maa’mi.

Being baffled is like using a bowl to scoop the water in the ‘omi iye’ stream.

How have you baffled the men in all their wisdom?

Have you learnt the deep tenets of magic?

Or have you made a covenant with the spirits?

To meet all the expectations of the men of akinkanju, okunrinogun and agbelona? And far exceed them.

Even now become indispensable, right under their noses?

Have you suddenly gained such power?

Or did the men simply underestimate you in your fragile structure?

.

How Maa’mi?

How do you now superceed Mother Nature with your nature?

Maa’mi, my mother with a nature above Mother Nature.
